St Giles Church wins National Lottery support

St Giles Parish Church has received initial support of £106,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) under the Grants for Places of Worship scheme for its Heritage project. The project aims to carry out essential refurbishment of the church building and provide improved access for those coming to the church for services or as visitors. The grant, made possible by National Lottery players, includes £11,300 to help with developing and finalising full project details, specifications and costings.

St Giles Heritage project involves carrying out repairs to crumbling stone tracery in church windows and to a crack in one wall, repairing a damaged roof support, restoring plasterwork and refurbishment of the church interior. The project is also intended to improve access to the building by providing an alternative entrance, subject to the necessary approvals. In addition, the project will involve local community organisations, schools and Heritage Society in developing new publicity materials and a range of events, open days, heritage walks and other activities to promote the Church’s heritage and getting others engaged in preserving it. Volunteers will be provided with information and training to enable them to take part in the various activities to promote the heritage of the church and the wider community of Killamarsh.

St Giles Church has been an integral part of the life of Killamarsh for many years. It dates back to the 12th century, with later additions in the 14th, 15th and 19th centuries. It has some magnificent stained glass windows, including one depicting the Madonna and Child which contains medieval glass. The tower houses a ring of six bells and one method of change ringing, Killamarsh Treble Bob, is named after the church. Outside can be seen a Saxon preaching cross and the village stocks, the latter not used for their original purpose for many years.

Commenting on the award, Revd Canon Helen Guest, the Rector of Killamarsh, said: “This is fantastic news. We’re delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has offered support for our  project, which will ensure that the church’s heritage is preserved for generations to come and will allow easier access, attracting more people into our beautiful church.”

Margaret Hall, Churchwarden, said “We are very thankful for all the hard work from all those who have helped us to win this award, which allows our project to go ahead. We look forward to the work being carried out to restore our church for the benefit of all in our community.”
